About the role
The National Domain Head has leadership of the Population and Public Health (PPH) Domain, including oversight of the population and public health curriculum and assessment content across the MD program with Schools in Sydney, Fremantle and Broome. The Population and Public Health domain covers the population, public and preventative health components of the MD program, including curriculum addressing the interaction of the environment and environmental change to individuals’ and population health and wellbeing, as well as sustainability in health practice.
This role reports to the National Head of Medical Education and Innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide national academic leadership for the Population and Public Health (PPH) Domain within the MD Program, including the development, coordination, and implementation of the PPH curriculum.
- Advise the National Head of Medical Education and Innovation, as well as the National Head of School and Deputy Heads of School, on matters relating to the delivery and advancement of the PPH curriculum.
- Lead the PPH Domain team nationally, encompassing all academic staff, and support the development, management, and training of sessional educators and tutors.
- Collaborate with the Curriculum team, Domain leads, administrative staff, clinical leads, and clinicians to ensure effective integration of PPH learning objectives across the MD Program.
- Ensure PPH curriculum resources remain current, evidence-based, and aligned with contemporary practice, while driving innovation in teaching approaches, including community engagement to enhance students’ understanding of population health needs.
- Work collaboratively with PPH academic staff, public health physicians, clinical school staff, and community partners to ensure locally delivered teaching aligns with national learning objectives and responds to community priorities.
- Partner with Assessment, Curriculum, and medical education teams to ensure PPH learning objectives are appropriately assessed and integrated across domains and disciplines.
- Contribute to the design, delivery, and marking of assessments (formative and summative), including written and clinical formats, and participate in standard-setting processes where required.
- Deliver high-quality teaching within the MD Program in accordance with the University’s teaching policies.
- Support and contribute to research and scholarship in medical education and the PPH Domain.
- Promote population and preventive health within the student cohort through the development of targeted educational initiatives.
Qualifications, skills & experience
Level D (Associate Professor)
- A Level D Academic Employee will normally have the same skill base as a Level C Academic Employee. In addition there is a requirement for academic excellence which may be evidenced by an outstanding contribution to teaching and/or research and/or the profession. A Level D Academic Employee is expected to make a significant contribution to all activities of the organisational unit or interdisciplinary area and play a significant role within their profession or discipline. An Academic Employee at this level may be appointed in recognition of distinction
in their disciplinary area
Level E (Professor)
- Level E Academic Employee is expected to exercise a special responsibility in providing leadership in fostering excellence in research, teaching, professional activities and policy development in the Academic discipline within the department or other comparable organisational unit, within the institution and within the community, both scholarly and general. A Level E Academic Employee will have the same skill base as a Level D Academic Employee but will be recognised as a leading authority in the relevant discipline area.
For both D/E
- Possession of a medical degree registrable with AHPRA and one of a Fellowship qualification in Public Health OR a PHD, AND more than five years teaching at Masters level or higher in medical, health or professional practice or higher education sector.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching, curriculum design, delivery and/or assessment in medical education, preferably in the health context and in a tertiary setting, with particular reference to the PPH domain curriculum content.
- A proven track record of research in the field of public health medicine.
- Sustained contribution to the professional development of other staff, evidenced through ongoing leadership in peer review and mentorship.
- Leadership role in major educational initiatives and enhancements of teaching and learning activities at the school/division and University level.
- Leadership role in enhancing student experience in the MD program in rural and remote medicine.
